Spiritual person

"He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove" (Mt 3:17).

Modern technology allows us to record and watch high-resolution films. We can transport ourselves to mountain peaks in the Himalayas or wander with dolphins across boundless oceans. Similarly, we can observe various species of tropical birds, animals, or reptiles. We don't even have to leave our warm homes to explore the entire world.

But are our eyes truly open? Can we still perceive the deeper meaning of the reality that surrounds us? Would we be able to perceive the Spirit of God descending like a dove upon the Son of God and hear from heaven the voice of God the Father? For this to be possible, certain conditions must be met. Today's liturgical readings, which we had the chance to hear just a moment ago, teach us about them.

Dear sisters and brothers!

Who among us is that good Christian in whom the Lord God is well pleased? Upon whom among us does the Holy Spirit descend in such a way that he brings peace to the world?

A spiritual person does not shout or raise their voice. We will not hear their cry in the street, like we hear other loud people. They do not cause distress to the weak who need support, nor do they extinguish their hope that barely smolders.

A spiritual person does not break down when hearing about upheavals and wars, but rather does everything to ensure there are no quarrels in their immediate surroundings – both in the family, in the community, and at work.

We await and seek such people in our lives. And perhaps we ourselves would like to be such people?

A Christian who knows how to listen to the inspirations of the Holy Spirit is formed and led by the hand by God Himself. Such a person becomes a light in our troubled world. The one who has eyes open to spiritual matters can open the eyes of the blind – those who look but do not see, and listen but do not hear. The one who is a person free from sin can lead their neighbors out of the bondage of sin – but not with words of command and force, but with their wisdom and peace.

Consider today, brother and sister: What kind of person are you? Are you the one who hears the voice of the Lord in your heart, or rather the one who drowns it out? Are you a Christian pleasing to God – one who fears Him and acts justly? Or are you still a sinner who remains stuck in the same mistakes and sins?
